Lawsuit Filed Against Geo Group on Prisoner's Suicide

The San Antonio Express published this story on a lawsuit recently filed by family members of Darrell Clayton Delany.  Mr. Delany, a federal prisoner incarcerated in the GEO operated Central Texas Detention Facility, committed suicide late last year in the private prison.   The lawsuit contends that:

[The] warden James Coapland was negligent in watching over Darrell Clayton Delany, 31, and that The GEO Group is liable for the acts of its employees.

According to reports, Mr. Delany killed himself on the day he was to be released from prison after he had been removed from suicide watch. 

A salient critique of private prisons is the lack of training among correctional staff to properly secure and maintain the facilities.  Those deficiencies can compromise the most basic safety and security. 

We will post any updates to the lawsuit.  Hopefully, the suit will shed some light on current GEO practices on mental health care and other issues.  We will keep y’all posted.

Im Darrell Delanys daughter. My dad didnt kill himself. Someone killed my dad. Why would my dad kill himself the day hes getting out.?? He was ready to get out so he can see and take care of his kids and i also know that my dad would have faught back so who ever did it had to a have put omething in his food or drink. My dad was a good person who actually took care of his kids so id appreciate it if you stop saying my dad killed himelf....

y would a man kill himself knowing he was getting out of prison he was happy to get out and see his kids so why would he do that? i wish yall would stop sayin he did killed himself cause he didnt sumone else did. i hope who ever did i hope yall suffer for what yall did. and i hope we all get justice esp. darrell yall took away sumone very special to us! Why would a man kill himself rather than go home?

Well, after a person is institutionalized for so long, they know no other way to live.  The fear of livng in the outside world is overwhelming.

It sound to me as if Mr Delany had either threatened to hurt himself or tried to - as he was on suicide watch prior to his release date.  This might denote some emotional issues.

Did he kill himself?  I don't know, nor to I care to guess. I am just answering your question.

If your going to talk about him get the whole story not just the sorry ass prisons my brother did not  kill himself or did he ever speak of it he was ready to come home to his children and family and he never threatened to hurt himself others were trying to hurt him and kill him and well they did because of the sorry ass prison system if they would have listened to him when he told them someone was going to kill him then maybe my family would not have had to bury my brother. Now he has 6 children who will never get to see there father so shut up with your dumb shit that he hung himself. His children shouldnt have to read shit like that.

Do you really think that a person who had a job, a place to live, a car to drive and his kids waiting for him would actually kill himself!!! Someone did this to him, and the person or persons involved may not pay for what they did in this lifetime, whether or not you believe in God you will pay when the time comes.
